Dollar Academy

At Dollar Academy, music education spans ages 5–18. For Louise Timney, Director of Music, MusicFirst provides flexible resources to reinforce musical concepts, develop listening skills and support engaging, differentiated learning.

The Challenge

With a broad curriculum to deliver, the music department needed accessible resources to reinforce theory, provide high-quality listening examples and meet pupils’ varied learning needs. A shared platform also offered an opportunity to improve consistency and collaboration across the teaching team.

The Solution: MusicFirst across the curriculum

Dollar Academy uses MusicFirst across its 5–18 curriculum, with Focus on Sound, Auralia, Musition and Soundtrap supporting a range of teaching, learning and creative activities.

  • Whole-class teaching: Focus on Sound helps Louise lead discussions, introduce listening examples and reinforce key concepts.
  • Independent learning: Teachers can set tasks for pupils to complete in class or at home, consolidating their understanding.
  • Differentiated learning: Some pupils can work independently while others receive one-to-one teacher support.
  • High-quality listening: Teachers can quickly introduce musical examples, including world music, helping pupils connect concepts with real music.

The Impact

A consistent approach
MusicFirst gives the department a shared resource, enabling teachers to exchange ideas, share effective practice and create greater consistency across lessons.
As Louise explains:
“We've got this one massive resource that we can all use and dip into and we can share good practice amongst us.”

Flexible, personalised teaching
The platform supports whole-class teaching, independent activities and differentiated learning, helping teachers adapt lessons to pupils’ needs.

Simple pupil access
A shared pupil login makes accessing the platform straightforward, allowing lessons to get underway quickly.

Reinforcing learning beyond the classroom
Assigned activities give pupils opportunities to revisit course content and practise listening and understanding independently.

Conclusion

At Dollar Academy, MusicFirst helps make music teaching more consistent, flexible and accessible. From reinforcing musical concepts to supporting independent learning and sharing good practice, it provides a valuable resource for teachers and pupils throughout their musical education.
